2020 WASBO Scholarship Recipients

$1,500 Wallace E. Zastrow Award Scholarship -
WASBO Foundation

Kaden W. Hansen, of the La Crosse School District

Kaden W. Hansen, of the La Crosse School District, is the recipient of the $1,500 Wallace E. Zastrow Award Scholarship, sponsored by the WASBO Foundation. The scholarship is in honor of Joe Ledvina, Supervisor of Buildings & Grounds for the La Crosse School District, who is the recipient of the 2020 Wallace E. Zastrow Award. Hansen will attend the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh, where he plans to major in Police Science while playing football and bowling. He also frequently works and volunteers in his community.

“Kaden has faced many challenges in his life, but these challenges have made him the caring, kind and thoughtful young man he is today,” his nomination letter states. “In life, Kaden strives to be the best that he can be and tries as hard as he can.”

This scholarship carries with it a $1,500 award to provide financial assistance to a graduating high school senior attending an accredited college or university (public or private). The scholarship is sponsored by the WASBO Foundation. Hansen will be awarded his scholarship certificate in conjunction with his district’s award recognition.

$3,000 Student Scholarship -
BMO Harris Bank

Maggie Chrostowski, of the Pecatonica Area School District

Maggie Chrostowski, of the Pecatonica Area School District, is the recipient of the $3,000 Student Scholarship, sponsored by the WASBO Foundation and BMO Harris Bank. Chrostowski is actively involved in sports, including playing on the volleyball and softball teams and serving as the football team’s statistician. She participates in her school’s forensics and drama clubs as well as the Great Lakes Sturgeon Bowl, a water sciences trivia competition. Chrostowski also is active in her religious community, where she teaches and volunteers at countless events and services.

Chrostowski plans to attend the University of Wisconsin Madison to study genetics and psychology, with the overall goal of becoming a genetic therapist. She chose this career path, because in middle school her mother was diagnosed with cancer, and Chrostowski wondered about the genetic risk of getting cancer.

“This career is perfect, because my biggest desire is to help others,” Chrostowski said. “I’ve always enjoyed helping others with big or small problems.”

This scholarship carries with it a $3,000 award to provide financial assistance to a graduating high school senior attending an accredited college or university (public or private). The scholarship is sponsored by the WASBO Foundation and BMO Harris Bank. Chrostowski will be awarded her scholarship certificate in conjunction with her district’s award recognition.

$4,000 Student Scholarship - EMC Insurance Companies

Kirsten Gahan, Pewaukee School District

Kirsten Gahan, of the Pewaukee School District, is the recipient of the $4,000 Student Scholarship, sponsored by the WASBO Foundation and EMC Insurance Companies. Gahan is actively involved in her religious community and has traveled to El Salvador twice to work with the children, youth and families of a partner congregation. She even organized a campaign with her school and congregation to collect and bring soccer shirts and equipment to the impoverished children in El Salvador. She also was a senior captain on the varsity tennis team and volunteers with the Key Club, International Club and Best Buddies.

Gahan plans to attend the University of Wisconsin Madison and major in biology or chemistry. She’s aspired to be a veterinarian since childhood.

“As I have grown through my education, my interest in this field has become stronger and broader in scope,” Gahan said. “The background knowledge necessary to pursue this course of study is also easily transferable into other areas of interest I may have. I feel I am well-prepared to follow up on my passion, whether it be through the medical or veterinary field.”

National Insurance Services & Miron Construction 

Josefine Jaynes, of the Kickapoo Area School District

Josefine Jaynes, of the Kickapoo Area School District, is the recipient of the $1,500 Student Scholarship, sponsored by the WASBO Foundation, National Insurance Services, and Miron Construction Co, Inc. Jaynes is actively involved in choir, band, cross country, basketball, track, and her district’s forensics and math teams. She also has volunteered on political campaigns and is active with her church.

Outside of class, she is active in the Vernon County Democratic Party and was selected to be a Wisconsin State Senate Scholar in 2019. She also intends to run for the 96th Wisconsin Assembly seat in the 2020 state election. Jaynes plans to attend the University of Wisconsin Madison.

“To make it to the top, I do not want to push people down to get higher; I want to lift them up with me,” Jaynes said. “I want to empower the people who feel powerless and improve the lives of those who are less fortunate.”

Nexus Solutions

Elaine Schumacher, of Medford Area Public Schools District

Elaine Schumacher, of Medford Area Public Schools, is the recipient of the $3,000 Student Scholarship, sponsored by the WASBO Foundation and Nexus Solutions. Schumacher is actively involved in her school’s student council, where she serves as president. She also is captain of her Science Olympiad team and Vice President of her school’s DECA and the Future Business Leaders of America. She is currently treasurer of her 4-H Club and is involved in many community service activities, including volunteering at the Taylor County Fair and being a youth representative for her church council.

Schumacher plans to attend St. Norbert’s College in De Pere, Wisconsin, to pursue a career in the medical field. To prepare for her potential career path, she currently volunteers two hours a week in the emergency room at Marshfield Clinic.

“I would like to be in a position in which I can fully use my skills that I’ve learned, including lab skills and science knowledge, to help patients and/or the population at large,” Schumacher said.

$4,000 Joel Konze Memorial/Facilities Management Conference Scholarship - Dude Solutions/Stalker Sports Floors

Lauren Bonetti, Green Bay Public Schools

Lauren Bonetti, of Green Bay Public Schools, is the recipient of the $4,000 Joel Konze Memorial/Facilities Management Conference Student Scholarship, sponsored by the WASBO Foundation, Dude Solutions and Stalker Sports Floors. Bonetti­­ is actively involved in leadership activities, including serving as president of her school’s chapter of DECA and the Future Business Leaders of America. She also is a member of the National Honor Society, her school’s student council and the Health Occupation Students of America. Bonetti stays active as a team captain of her school’s varsity golf team.

She plans to attend Marquette University and major in mechanical engineering.

“My love of math and science is fueled by the lack of women in the STEM field,” Bonetti said. “I plan to make some major waves wherever I am placed and change some minds about what women can achieve when it comes to math and science.”
