Description
Bus drivers are often placed in a challenging position. They are required to ensure the safety of students while on the bus, but must also make sure that they attend to their driving responsibilities. To assist the district and the driver in this situation, schools often install a surveillance camera on the bus. However, drivers must also understand their responsibilities and limitations in ensuring that students are safe on the bus. This presentation will discuss the various legal issues that must be considered by school districts and bus drivers, including preventing any harassment and recommending discipline when appropriate.

School districts are often faced with challenges in finding and maintaining employees, including bus drivers. When hiring drivers and other employees, the district must follow certain procedures, including conducting background checks, contacting references, and verifying certifications. Even after the hiring occurs, districts must still ensure that the drivers continue to meet district standards. Such staffing issues present challenges for districts. Similar challenges are present when the district contracts out for such services. This presentation will provide guidance for districts on ensuring that the district understands the legal issues presented by such staffing issues.
