There are currently over 408,000 LED lighting products on the approved DLC list! How do you determine which products are best for your application when everyone claims "my product lasts forever, will replace your existing fixture and provide more light, and consume almost nothing in energy.” What is Important: 5 or 10 year warranty, higher lumens per watt, low total harmonic distortion, 50,000 or 100,000 hours life, add on or integrated controls, name brands or companies you've never heard of? All of these issues affect the performance, cost, and value you get by choosing the right or wrong product. We will explore how these metrics are established, how to compare them objectively, and discuss some myths about LED lighting. The goal of this session is to help attendees be better educated buyers and understand the "lighting lingo" that is bantered about in the industry. We will demystify this technology and cut through the marketing hype to provide objective facts on what LED lighting can provide for your facilities and what to consider for good, long term performance.

Public education is a service industry and everyone in your community is a customer. We serve students, parents, community members, other employees, the media, business leaders, and many others. It is not always apparent to custodians and maintenance employees, even managers or supervisors, that theirs is a customer-service oriented position and that they are public relations ambassadors for their school district. This session will cover the essential of good customer service and help you develop the framework of a training session that you can implement in your district using specific training session examples from other school districts.

Drawing on technical examples, lessons learned and best practices from a recently completed 20 energy optimization projects, this presentation will comprehensively explore and explain the challenges and key components necessary to execute successful retro-commissioning (RCx) projects. RCx case-studies and finding will be discussed. The presentation will also discuss the financial incentives available that can make your projects low cost or even no cost. Executing projects within this domain is particularly significant, as they ultimately will impact building occupant's health as well as their ability to perform. For example, studies have shown increased indoor air quality has been attributed to a decreased amount of sick days. Through this process of RCx, it is ensured that building systems are designed, installed, functionally tested, and capable of being operated and maintained in conformance with the current facility requirements. That is, the building will function per the occpants/owner’s expectations. Regardless of the cause of degraded performance, RCx ensures that anemic areas of system performance are identified and quantified such that corrective actions to bring the system back to its most optimal state are identified. This is done through a prudent engineering process whereby existing systems are assessed and tested to determine the level of conformance with the current facility requirement. Retro-Commissioning main goals and objectives are to:
• Bring equipment to its optimal operating efficiency
• Reduce energy demands and cost
• Reduce complaints
• Increase occupants’ satisfaction and comfort
• Increase equipment life
• Improve indoor environmental quality
• Reduce staff time spent on emergency call
• Improve facility operation
• Decrease your monthly fixed costs
• Improve yearly equipment budget forecasting
• Keep project cost effectiveness to less than 3 years simple payback
This track will help you understand the Retro-Commissioning Process in its totality, financial & operational benefits, learn the benefits of Utilizing Incentive Funding, and help determine the expected results of implementing the RCx for your facilities.

With the introduction of Wisconsin’s 2018 School Safety Initiative, an increased number of school districts recognized the opportunity to enhanced safety and security measures. Actions are being taken at a faster pace in an effort to put these measures in place, but are these actions the wisest use of district funds? Our experts will explore the processes to plan and implement security and safety measures that provide the most impact and greatest value. We will discuss the best practices and common approaches to providing enhanced security and safety in school construction. We will discuss methods that shortcut the planning and design process resulting in less than desired outcomes.
