2022 Transportation & Bus Safety Conference

The WASBO Transportation Conference provides education and training opportunities to enhance safe school transportation for Wisconsin children.



Who Should Attend?

Transportation directors, business managers, bus contractors and anyone with school district transportation responsibilities should attend. Network with colleagues, visit the Facilities Management Conference Resource Area, and attend informative sessions covering themes to:
  • Gain an Understanding of how bus contracts have changed.
  • Engage with other Transportation Directors on how they are handling the bus driver shortage and what alternative transportation options you can use.
  • Discuss the process of changing bell times, who to involve in the decision and how it could impact your district.
  • Hear from the DPI about Transportation Reporting & Audits.
  • Ask your questions about PBIS and Student Behavior Management.

Individuals registering at the Non-Member rate receive a free trial WASBO membership through 6/30/2023 if you have not previously been a member. At least one individual from your organization must be a WASBO or WSBA member to take advantage of multi-attendee pricing. If the multi-attendee pricing option is selected erroneously (i.e. you are the only registrant from your organization), you agree to be billed for the difference in registration fees. Each individual will need to register separately.

The bus driver shortage is impacting all school districts whether the district has a contracted service or a district operated transportation program. Join the conference’s first session in a roundtable format where informal conversations between peers will gather ideas to recruit and retain school bus drivers. Interested in learning more about bus tracking software? Learn from your peers about the most common softwares used in Wisconsin schools as well as the advantages and disadvantages. The session is moderated by Rhonda Page and Joe Marquardt. Rhonda works for the Sun Prairie Area School District that partners with contracted services for transportation while Joe works for the School District of New London that operates its own transportation program.

Transportation continues to be an issue for school district activities with the driver shortage and a continuing increase in school activities. When a bus is not available, what are the options. We will review safety issues with certain vehicles and what options are available within specific Wisconsin State Statutes for student transportation. We are also looking for participants to share any creative solutions your district has used to meet the needs of your students.

Roselynn & Mark will focus on the common errors that may trigger an audit for school districts and how to avoid. They will also provide tips and tricks for a successful transportation audit.

What action steps can be taken when there are reoccurring challenges with a particular student on the bus; such as a student that needs additional support? How do we assist students who struggle to follow the rules? What action steps can be taken to support newer drivers? How do we create a team feeling between educational administrators and school bus staff? How do we know if our actions are reducing school bus incidents? What are the barriers to establishing a school bus staff/educational staff team for examining school bus data at least once a year to brainstorm action steps for resolutions? Are you looking for additional options to help students follow the rules and feel safe during the school bus ride? The Educational Nonprofit Children’s Promise will share information about PBIS, Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports, a national initiative being put into action within 50% of our Wisconsin School Districts.

This session shares information on not only who to involve in changing school schedules, but how and when to involve them in a strategic way. Communications as part of an implementation plan of major changes is also presented. Finally, developing a detailed plan is key to any major change undertaken by a school district. The information presented in this presentation can inform other changes that school districts are considering.
