Grief happens. I had to figure out how to deal with it when a close work colleague died of a heart attack. Figuring out how to pick up the pieces of our collaborative work was also hard. Then it happened again when my wife passed away and I became a single father of three children under seven. Sometimes grief happens to us, and sometimes it happens to others who work with or for us. At some point we have to return to work, and even though the dark clouds of grief may still be there, we have to do our work and lead others to positive outcomes. Through sharing of personal examples and exploration of research on grief and leadership, this session will provide insight into grief and grieving, and workplace strategies and resources for working with or leading others struggling with grief. If you've struggled with grief, have to work with or lead others who grieve, or just want to learn more about it, come join us for a thoughtful conversation.

Although your district may already be going through a planning, design, or construction process we know it is not something that the average person does more than once or twice, let alone on a daily basis. It can be confusing to someone who has never gone through it with a seemingly endless list of terms, phrases, and acronyms. Luckily for you, we live and breathe it every day. From learning what SD, DD, and CD mean to you to conversations about delivery methods and understanding what each project partner does, in this session our architectural and engineering experts will walk you through some of the most frequently asked questions during the planning, design, and construction phases of a project. You will leave the session with a better understanding of what to expect, giving you the confidence to make decisions and ask the right questions.

Schools regularly make decisions on what materials and finishes are installed within their facilities, but how much is truly known about the impact of these decisions? In this session participants will gain a more holistic understanding of a myriad of considerations to better inform future selections. Often, when the least expensive option is installed districts are locked into significant life cycle costs and maintenance that impact the quality of the indoor environment and the potential health of building occupants. Participants will also be presented with first-hand information on where various materials are most/least appropriate – there is no one-size-fits-all solution. Our team will provide a side-by-side analysis of various material options – providing extensive review of key considerations, and where products could be used within their own facilities. Pictures of completed spaces will be shared to illustrate what is possible through creative uses of different selections. We will also provide samples of a variety of materials to provide participants the opportunity to examine the construction of different products and the range of options within different categories. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of the acoustical performance, air quality impacts, life cycle costs, durability, and maintenance requirements of various interior material selections. With this information they will be able to make the most appropriate selections for their unique environments.

According to a national survey of school districts by the U.S. Government Accountability Office, an estimated 54 percent of public school districts need to update or replace multiple building systems or features. As is the case in many districts, you might be asking yourself, “Are we one of them?”, and “How do I know where to start?”. In this session, our team will identify some of the tell-tale signs if your buildings or systems need updates. From stained and damaged floor and ceiling tiles to poor air quality from mold, asbestos, or low air exchange rates, we’ll help you understand the most common clues that your buildings are not operating at their peak performance.

Fabrics and Flames: Essential Guidelines for Fire Code Compliance, Cleaning, and Handling of Stage Drapery in Schools. Fire Safety on stages is a real issue- drapes are naturally flammable and, when exposed to hot lights, or electrical sparks, there is an increased risk of fire. Flameproofing on drapes form an important part of a school’s fire safety system. This presentation is designed to educate school officials on how to assess the risks and better understand their requirements under the Fire Code as they relate to stage drapery. We review the relevant sections of the Fire Code, and explain facts that school business officials need to know- for example, many engineering consulting firms are specifying drapes in new schools which are not in compliance with the fire code. We review the different types of fabrics and flame retardant treatments available which do comply. In addition, we share practical knowledge from the field sharing little-known facts such as flame retardant wears off over time, will be washed out if the drapes become wet, and how to make drapery compliant with the fire code without incurring the significant cost of replacement.

This presentation summarizes regulations, legislation, and recommendations regarding drinking water in schools. Specifically, schools supplied by groundwater wells. The presentation reviews the EPA’s Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) and the sampling requirements, broken down by contaminant, for a system on an average DNR monitoring schedule. This includes lead and copper, volatile organic contaminants (VOCs), inorganic contaminants (IOCs) and PFAS. Over the past couple of years, new SDWA initiatives and programs have been enacted to add or change maximum contaminant levels for PFAs and lead in drinking water. These changes are thoroughly explained and reviewed, to help schools feel prepared and educated about their water systems.

With the passage of many facility referenda, Wisconsin facility managers have been tasked with oversight of billions of dollars in construction projects over the last decade. A facility manager's role in each of these projects can differ, but trust that you will be expected to lead, and that large projects can consume a facility manager for years at a time. This course is designed to give a brief overview of the stages of a referendum, from planning, through execution. We will review some pitfalls to avoid as well as opportunities that will present themselves.
