In this session we will cover all aspects of capital planning from the development of a five or ten year plan for major maintenance, energy, security, etc. to planning of new schools or additions. Your presenters will discuss how to prioritize projects as well as identifying funding sources, managing tax impact, and understanding debt retirement schedules. They will also discuss formulating a communication plan to present your plan to the Superintendent, School Board and general public. Finally, they will cover potential resources to help you in the overall capital planning process.

Learn about the different grades and what value they may offer your buildings. Discover the differences between commodity vs. specification grade light fixtures, electrical wiring devices, wiring methods, and equipment (i.e. fire alarm systems, load centers vs. panelboards). Explore what the different types of HVAC systems can offer you from furnaces to air-handling systems, use of conventional fuels to geothermal, and how to navigate digital controls with proprietary and open protocols. Hear about important plumbing system design decisions that impact facility function, maintenance, both construction and operational costs, and end-user safety including plumbing fixtures selection, water treatment and heating systems, and piping materials.

With the passage of many facility referenda, Wisconsin facility managers have been tasked with oversight of billions of dollars in construction projects over the last decade. A facility manager's role in each of these projects can differ, but trust that you will be expected to lead, and that large projects can consume a facility manager for years at a time. This course is designed to give a brief overview of the stages of a referendum, from planning, through execution. We will review some pitfalls to avoid as well as opportunities that will present themselves.

School districts throughout Wisconsin have been experiencing a troubling scenario: a phone call comes into the school about an active shooter. Law enforcement responds to the call, only to determine it was a hoax. These incidents of ‘swatting’ – an action of placing hoax phone calls to report serious crises (bomb threat, active shooter, etc.) to local law enforcement is on this increase. This program will address swatting indicators as well as mitigation strategies to address swatting incidents.
